Finally, Tesla’s Model Y has landed in India, and it has certainly been worth the wait. With an estimated price range starting from ₹59.89 lakh to ₹67.89 lakh, the Model Y competes against some stiff competition in the form of Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Kia’s EV6. The one unique thing about this car is that it’s fun to drive, quick to charge, and just gets better with time. No other car in this price range does all three this well.

Tesla Model Y Price in India

The Tesla Model Y price in India starts at ₹59.89 lakh and goes up to ₹67.89 lakh, ex-showroom. With the recent addition of the long-wheelbase Model Y L, the range now spans three variants, priced between ₹59.89 lakh and ₹67.89 lakh ex-showroom. Do note that Tesla’s optional Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature adds ₹6 lakh on top of any variant price.

Tesla Model Y Variants

The Tesla Model Y is available in three variants in India:

  • Premium RWD: ₹59.89 lakh
  • Premium Long Range RWD: ₹67.89 lakh
  • Model Y L (Long Wheelbase AWD): ₹61.99 lakh

Engine and Performance

The Model Y is fully electric, which means zero engine noise, zero gear changes, and zero waiting for power to kick in. Both the standard variants are powered by a rear-axle-mounted electric motor producing up to 295 hp, with the 60 kWh version doing 0-100 kmph in 5.6 seconds and the long-range version rated at a WLTP range of 661 km. The Model Y L steps it up further with a dual-motor AWD setup that sprints from 0-100 kmph in 5.0 seconds and offers a claimed 681 km of range.

Charging is where Tesla truly leads. Using a 250 kW DC fast charger, the battery can recover up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes. On the road, the Model Y feels effortlessly quick, the throttle response is immediate, the ride is composed, and there’s near-zero noise in the cabin. It’s genuinely fun without trying to be a sports car.

Exterior Design

The Model Y doesn’t scream for attention; it earns it. The front is minimalist with a blanked-off face, sleek LED DRLs connected by a light bar, and headlights in a separate lower housing, creating a clean, modern look. The crossover roof line that slopes into the tailgate is another feature visible from the profile view, along with the flush door handles, which add to its futuristic appearance. At the rear, connected LED tail lamps and a subtle integrated spoiler complete the look, with a blacked-out lower bumper adding a sporty edge.

Colour options include Stealth Grey (standard), Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quicksilver, and Ultra Red, several available at an additional cost. The Model Y sits on 19-inch aero-optimized alloy wheels across all variants.

Interior and Seating Comfort

Step inside, and the Model Y cabin is unlike anything in this segment. The dashboard is flat and minimal, finished with soft-touch materials and a single horizontal ambient light strip running across its width. There are no physical buttons; everything is operated through the centrally mounted touchscreen.

The 5-seater standard variant gets a 16-inch centre touchscreen and an 8-inch rear touchscreen for middle-row passengers. The front seats are powered, heated, and ventilated. Rear seat space is genuinely impressive for tall adults. The Model Y L goes further with electronically operated captain seats in the second row, with ventilation, heating, armrests, and one-touch folding, plus powered recline and dedicated AC vents for the third row. Build quality feels premium throughout, though some rival SUVs offer a more “luxurious” tactile experience.

Features and Technology

The Tesla Model Y is controlled almost entirely through its large central touchscreen; there are no physical buttons or dials on the dashboard. The infotainment is fluid, fast, and genuinely intuitive. Both variants now feature a 16-inch centre display (updated from the earlier 15.4-inch unit), along with an 8-inch rear touchscreen.

Beyond screens, the Model Y brings features that no rival offers: over-the-air (OTA) software updates that improve the car remotely, a custom horn, Pet Mode, Sentry Mode, and Tesla’s iconic light show. Navigation, voice commands, and music streaming are all built in, with Standard Connectivity included. Tesla’s optional Full Self-Driving suite (₹6 lakh extra) adds semi-autonomous capabilities, though regulatory approval for full activation in India is still pending.

Safety Features

The Model Y carries a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating from 2025, and comes equipped with up to 9 airbags, including dual front, side chest, side head, and a centre airbag. The ADAS suite includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot collision warning, and lane-departure avoidance. Eight exterior cameras provide a 360-degree view around the vehicle. The structure itself is built to Tesla’s global safety standards, which consistently rank among the best in independent crash tests.

Boot Space and Practicality

The Tesla Model Y offers 890 litres of boot space, expandable to 2,138 litres with the rear seats folded. It also comes with an 88-litre front trunk (frunk) under the hood, which is extra storage most rivals simply can’t offer. For daily use, the cabin storage is generous too, with a large centre console, deep door pockets, and a hidden compartment beneath the floor. As a family EV for road trips, the Model Y’s practicality is hard to beat in this segment.

Final Verdict

The Tesla Model Y is, without question, the most technologically advanced electric SUV you can buy in India today. The Model Y shines when it comes to range, fast charging capabilities, the software experience, and safety features. If you appreciate innovative technology, fuss-free driving, and a vehicle that continually improves itself with over-the-air updates, the Model Y is worth every rupee.

However, it may not suit all Indian consumers. The ride can feel firm on broken roads, the fixed glass roof offers no shade option, and Tesla’s service network is still limited to a few major cities. The pricing, particularly when you add colours and FSD, can quickly cross ₹70 lakh.

Yet, for tech-forward buyers in metro cities who want the most future-proof EV available today, the Tesla Model Y is a compelling, bold choice. It doesn’t just compete with the BYD Sealion 7 or Hyundai Ioniq 5; it redefines what the segment should look like.
