India Passenger Vehicle Sales Jump 27.3%, Hit Record High

Komal Thakur June 15, 2026

May 2026 has turned out to be the best the Indian auto industry has ever seen. India passenger vehicle sales in May 2026 came in at 4,38,854 units, up 27.3% from 3,44,656 units in May 2025. According to SIAM auto sales data released on June 15, every major vehicle segment posted double-digit growth, making this one of those months the industry will point back to for a while.

A combination of reduced GST rates, better financing options, and strong OEM performances pushed the numbers up. Here’s a closer look at what actually happened.

Why Sales Jumped This Month

Three factors came together: the lower base effect from May 2025, demand created by reduced GST rates, and easier financing conditions, as SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon noted. These aren’t new factors, but in May they all showed up at the same time.

The GST reduction that kicked in last year has been working its way through the market steadily, lowering on-road prices and making EMIs more manageable. Banks and NBFCs have also loosened lending conditions, which have helped buyers across price brackets. And May 2025 was a relatively soft month, so the year-on-year comparison was always going to look strong.

The 27.3% rise is a genuine improvement, though the low base from last year has helped boost the figure.

Passenger Vehicle Segment Breakdown

Within India, passenger vehicle sales in May 2026, utility vehicles continued to lead. Utility Vehicles(UV) grew 24.8% to 2,45,549 units from 1,96,821 units in May 2025, remaining the volume driver of the Passenger Vehicle segment. That’s more than half of all passenger vehicles sold during the month coming from one sub-segment, which tells you where buyer preference is firmly settled right now.

Van sales came in at 13,240 units, up 7.4% from 12,327 units in May 2025, a modest but steady number for a segment that doesn’t get much attention.

Passenger cars had a solid month too. Maruti’s compact car portfolio, including the Alto K10, WagonR, and S-Presso, contributed 81,555 units, while SUVs accounted for 79,267 units within Maruti’s own lineup.

How the Top OEMs Did

The top six carmakers, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai, Toyota, and Kia, together sold 4,13,445 units, accounting for nearly 94% of total passenger vehicle sales during the month.

Maruti Suzuki held its position at the top by a wide margin. The company dispatched 1,90,337 units in May 2026, up 40% from 1,35,962 units in May 2025, taking its market share to 43.2%, a gain of 4.3 percentage points year-on-year.

Tata Motors came in second. Tata sold 59,090 units domestically, a 42.2% year-on-year increase from 41,557 units in May 2025. A big part of that story is EVs; Tata sold 10,517 EVs in May 2026, compared to 5,685 units in the same month last year, with the Punch EV, Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Curvv EV driving that growth.

Mahindra came in third. Mahindra reported 58,021 domestic units in May, a 10.7% year-on-year increase. The gap between Tata and Mahindra stayed narrow, and that rivalry is likely to continue through the year.

Hyundai reported domestic sales of 47,837 units, up 9.1% year-on-year, led by the Creta, Venue, and Exter.

Toyota sold 30,574 vehicles in May and crossed the milestone of 3,00,000 cumulative strong-hybrid vehicle sales in India, a number that reflects how seriously the hybrid segment is being taken by Indian buyers.

Kia also had its best-ever May, though exact numbers weren’t separately broken out in SIAM data.

EV Sales Are Climbing

One of the more notable trends in India’s passenger vehicle sales in May 2026 is the rising share of electric cars. Electric cars accounted for nearly 7% of total passenger vehicle volumes in May, the highest share EVs have held in overall car sales in the last year or so. A total of 21,953 electric battery-powered cars were sold during the month.

For context, EV share was 4.1% in January 2026 and 4.7% in May 2025, so the rise over just a few months is notable. Rising fuel prices have clearly nudged some buyers toward electric, along with better charging infrastructure and a wider range of models to choose from.

On the two-wheeler side, EV penetration in the segment increased from 7.9% in April 2026 to 9.2% in May 2026, with TVS Motors, Bajaj Auto, and Ather Energy leading sales.

Two-Wheelers and Three-Wheelers

India passenger vehicle sales may have grabbed the main headline, but the broader auto industry growth picture in India is equally positive.

Two-wheeler sales rose 14.8% to 19,02,209 units. Within that, scooters grew faster at 27.4% to 7,39,667 units, while motorcycle sales grew 7.2% to 11,13,973 units. Scooters outpacing motorcycles points to stronger urban demand and the ongoing shift toward electric models in that category.

Three-wheeler dispatches were up 31.1% to 70,720 units, the strongest growth of any segment in May.

Overall vehicle wholesales across all categories grew 16.8% to 23,52,693 units in May 2026.

What to Watch Going Ahead

The month was strong, no question. But a few things could slow things down as 2026 progresses.

Both Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have already announced price hikes across select models from June 2026, citing rising input costs. If EMIs go up as a result, it could affect demand at the entry level more than other segments.

The base effect will also start becoming less favourable. May 2025 was genuinely weak, which made May 2026 look strong by comparison. As the months roll on, year-on-year comparisons get tougher.

On the positive side, EV adoption is picking up pace, hybrid models are finding steady buyers, and SUV sales in India remain strong. The structural drivers of India’s auto market,  wider financing reach, rising incomes in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and new model launches, are still firmly in place.

India’s passenger vehicle sales in May 2026 set a new benchmark for the month. Whether the rest of 2026 can sustain that pace is the more interesting question.
